We are currently experiencing a heatwave, life doesn’t get any better. In fact, today it is going to get as hot as 30+ degrees. With weather this hot, it can affect us a lot, however lifts in hot weather are affected too.
Combined with the fact that today marks the day that England play in the world cup against Ghana. Fresh off a win against Croatia, the England team are looking better than ever. The nation is on the edge of their seats hoping we secure yet another victory. Soon enough, we will see.
How Does The Heat Affect Lifts?
Blistering heat (temperature and moisture) can affect hydraulic lifts. The scorching heat can affect a lifts performance and reliability, which could cause some issues.
Extremely hot weather can cause hydraulic fluid to thin (opposite to what the cold weather does), this can mean the lifts operation is unreliable. Extreme temperatures can also impact equipment and human safety.
Lots of old hydraulic passenger lifts have external motor rooms, these are typically outside of a building. These motor rooms can reach extreme temperatures during summer or a heatwave. Lift control systems and other equipment can also be affected by hot weather.
How To Reduce The Hot Weathers Effects
- Ensure regular lift maintenance (2 visits a year minimum)
- Have 2 LOLER inspections yearly (this is the legal minimum)
- Ensure temperature of motor room is between 15c and 25c
- Keep lift shaft and door area temperature between 15c and 25c
- Always completed LOLER advice or urgent work.
- Follow your lift companies advice on preventative work.
