In the grand scheme of things, the lift as we know it is still fairly new. It was only in the 1920s that the push button was invented. Once upon a time lifts were dramatically different, being moved manually by a “liftboy” as they were known as. Lifts back then certainly aren’t as safe or efficient as they are today.

In the early days, the task of operating a lift was seen as extremely skilful. In pre World War 1 Germany, you would have had to undergo at least 3 years training to become a lift operator (or “liftboy”). The liftboy would open and close the doors, as well as move the lift from floor to floor.

There also used to be plush benches for passengers to sit on while they are in the lift. Travel speed was significantly slower back then so it was good for being comfy. Lifts back then may have felt more VIP as they were more scarce and focused on pampering the user, but they were a lot more unsafe and slower.

Lifts have come a long way since their invention, and continue to get better as time progresses. They still break down and need looking after of course, but lift companies can make them work at full efficiency.
